Perimeter and Area of Similar Figures

How to Teach Perimeter and Area of Similar Figures – in Jay Leno’s Garage

This can be a fun lesson because you can discuss modeling! No, not like runway models. Models like the little cars we used to build as kids or those 3D puzzles of buildings.
That old mustang model car you put together as a kid then purchased and re-built the exact real car as an adult.
The 3D puzzle of the Eiffel Tower you put together as a little girl and then went to Paris to visit the real thing as an adult.
These are examples of similarity. A great ice breaker for this lesson is to show them just how much they actually use it in the real world.
Every time a building is built, blue prints are made to scale! The list goes on…
Make this lesson a fun hands on one!

Here is a Good Video to Introduce Similarity:

This video has absolutely NOTHING to do with math! However, it is a video of small models of some of Jay Leno’s famous cars. It is a great way to relate similarity to the real world. Depending on your class make up you may show just a portion or the whole 10 minute video. Once you have peaked their interest with this real world example you will have their attention when you get into the math of it.
