Measuring Angles Putt-Putt Course Design Project

Measuring Angles Putt-Putt Course Design Project

This Measuring Angles Project provides the instructions for students to design a putt-putt golf course that incorporates requirements for acute, obtuse, right, straight, and reflex angles.

There is a list of specific measurements to use as well as parallel and perpendicular lines and shapes to include such as a right, isosceles, equilateral, and scalene triangle; and other geometric shapes.

Examples are given that show some finished products and how to label them. A ‘blueprint’ with labels and a finished product are recommended for this project. The lesson is available in printable PDF format.

Your students will be designing a Full 9 Hole Putt-Putt Golf Course! Follow the instructions below to get started.

Student Pairing

This project can be done as a solo project if you have a class full of class clowns or even honors students. I prefer to have the student work on their courses in groups of 2 or 3. Anything more than that and they will have too many ideas and it will slow down the course creation.

Project Options

This project can be done 3 different ways.

  1. Split your class into 9 groups. Have each group create a real Miniature Golf Course Hole. They can use things like wood, cardboard, or foam board. There are tons of options for this. Let them be creative and use what they want or what is available. Things they try will work and won’t work. When ideas fail they are good teaching points. When they complete the course let them actually play it. You’ll need putters and golf balls. (My advice would be to use plastic golf clubs and balls. The ones toddlers use growing up.)
  2. The second option would be to have them create the course using some form of technology. There are tons of apps and software that can be used for this. One free option would be have them create the course using Canva or even something like Geogebra.
  3. The last option would be to have them draw it up on paper or poster board. This is less fun for them but still gets the lesson across with the same result. This also takes less class time to finish. Each group will also be able to create all 9 holes instead of just one.
